There is never a shortage of ducks and water fowl in the Shuswap. We are fortunate enough to encounter Canada Geese, female and male mallards and their tiny babies (in early spring), cormorants,  Grebes (although I am still hoping to capture them doing their beautiful mating dance), common merganser, scoters, and many more.

Canada Geese, often an over-looked bird, beautiful and splendid.

The Western Grebe, is abundant on Shuswap Lake each year, their amazing dance being one of the most elaborate breeding rituals seen.

rarer sightings of the cormorants and the merganser

let’s not forget the American Coot (this one I am still not sure of)

For the birds!

Always experimenting, I started painting birds (I am an avid photographer, and one of my favourite pastimes is bird watching). You might want to check out some of my photos.

Landscapes

After my 40 year hiatus, I started painting again, which took a lot of work and time to get to the point where I was able to do a presentable work of art.  Here are a few of my landscapes:

Abandoned houses

There are times when I need to expand my horizons, try painting something different and unusual.  I love old houses that have a story to tell, these three are an example. Some people like these paintings, some asked me “why did you paint them?” My answer: ” I had to”.

Ebook: https://www.amazon.com/Child-Ancients-Shirley-Bigelow-DeKelver-ebook/dp/B07644QC83

Young Adult Dark Fantasy novel, CHILD OF THE ANCIENTS, available for purchase through Kindle. Don’t miss it, a good read for young adults (ages 10 and up) and for adults (even seniors).

SHORT SYNOPSIS OF CHILD OF THE ANCIENTS

A terrifying catastrophe in the past has blocked young Aurie’s memories, and when she inadvertently discovers she has magical powers, she is captured and imprisoned in Prince Kalian’s dungeon. Magic is forbidden in the kingdom and anyone using it is put to death. She escapes with the aid of Armitage Ravenwood, a powerful wizard, and his companion, Seamus Stark, a trained warrior and deserter from the Royal Army. She discovers she is half Eldoran, or High Elf, and half-Ancient, and her mixed bloodline is the catalyst generating her tremendous abilities. Armitage assumes the role as her mentor, over the years honing her powers, all the while concealing from her a dark and shocking secret. She learns of a prophesy, predicted by Armitage over five hundred years ago, that a powerful sorceress of mixed blood would confront the Evil Lord and only one would survive the altercation. Should she fail, Earth and Fey Wild would be thrown into perpetual darkness and evil would prevail. Growing up without family or an identity, Aurie must cope with her insecurities and come to value her gift, and also find the strength and confidence to confront Prince Kalian. Will she fail in her mission or will she succeed?

Paintings from the ocean to the prairies, old trucks and cars

Painting has always been a part of me, I relish the times when I can sit at my dining room table, and create.  My husband and I went to Vancouver Islands years ago, and these two photos emerged. They are hung in our dining room.

I was born and “partially” raised (I am an Army Brat) in Calgary, Alberta, and the beauty of the prairies and mountains are not only captured by my camera, but by my paint brush as well:

I also love old cars and trucks, especially if I discover them buried in grass or covered with branches and leaves in the woods.  These two are not far from where I live.
